Chapter 7

A few hours later I came home and relieved to be out of that mess. I opened the door and got welcomed in. I was so tired I went straight to my bedroom. As I stumbled in lazily I could hear my mum saying "He's so tired you'd have thought he escaped an earthquake, a tsunami and a giant, evil intergalactic octopus with psychic powers." I smiled sleepily and drifted off to sleep.

Day 6

I'm wakened by the ghostly horn again. The sound is closer now. I go up the mountain towards it. After a few minutes, I came upon a fortress of some sort. I hear the horn again coming from it. I've got the right place. I walk inside and I find there's no-one there. I see a crate and I open it. It was empty. Disappointed, I kick it and a cloak flies out. The cloak makes itself the same colour as the ground. I pick it up and I examine it. "Maybe this will transform me, like Sam's" I thought to myself. I put it on and I morph into a giant chameleon. Suddenly, I see a figure. He was semitransparent. I camouflage myself and scuttle away. I'm hungry so I start munching on leaves. It's not nice but there isn't anything else. I go up the mountain to find water. It takes me hours to find it. In the mountain was a spring. I take a long, refreshing drink and follow the stream. At about 6:00 I find it leads to the caverns. I am NOT going in there again. I see a comet in the sky. Then suddenly something jumps off it. It's the octopus! Then, with a loud BANG, the octopus hits the ground. It is huge! The shock wave spreads and I fall down along with the trees. I avoid being crushed and I see bubbles of energy fly across to the alien where the people inside got devoured. Then Robyn with an amulet cast a spell on the enemy. I was surprised at how good my vision was. The octopus shrieked as it got engulfed in a bubble. Then, with a loud shout, Robyn made the bubble smaller and smaller and the octopus got crushed. Robyn then chanted a spell and suddenly the water rushed out of the Waikato and the ground shook dead cows came back to life and life went back to normal. Well, almost. The room5ians still had magic powers instead of staffs and instead of cloaks they could shapeshift. But life was very different. If Geoff wanted to go kite flying he just summoned some wind, or if Mitchell wanted an ice block he could hold a ice block stick in a cup of juice and then use his freezing powers. Yes, there were a lot of changes since kakepuku.

Day 5 Continued

Vines come up out of the ground and I realize this is Jimi. I blast him with wood but he repels it with vines. I summon up wood razors that slash through his shield of vines and make him bleed. he concentrates his vines on the razors to grab them but I poke the taniwha and absorb his staff. The taniwha shrieks and tries to resist but he is getting weaker and weaker. The vines suddenly shrivel away and die. Suddenly, the taniwha shrinks and standing there, defeated, was Jimi. Then we heard it. At least I did. It was the sound of rushing water. Jimi runs away just as I see another cave. I build an aqueduct to wash me over there. I get up and build a raft just in time. The water comes and I land on the shore. I take a step. The ground made a sickening crunch. I look down and I immediately wish I hadn't. I had just stepped on a skull. I suddenly smell rotting corpses. Someone or something doesn't want me here. My face got caught in a spider web. It was a bit large. More like it was HUGE. I gulped. I heard a rustle. I stopped. There it was again, scuttling towards me. Coming towards me was a very hungry giant spider. I send vines and they bind the spider. I cover it with wood. Then I saw them. Eggs! And they were just about to hatch. I run away, towards the exit, ignoring the disgusting sound underfoot. I make it out, glad to be out of that horrible place, and find myself in a building. It had a great view so I figured it was the lookout. I was so tired I lay down and went to sleep.

Day 5

WOOOOOOOOOOH!!!
I hear the ghostly Maori horn blow again. My ent body decides to permanently change its victims into trees. It starts casting in a treeish voice. Mitchell's bark is nearly ready when Jimi appears holding a staff. The ent tries to ignore him but I can tell that it is afraid. Jimi frees Connor and then Kate. When he had finished saving Steph, the spell was nearly ready. The ent started talking faster but it was too late. Jimi summoned up a blast of vines and I crashed into a hard tree. My shell of wood cracks and the ent, screaming, fell away.
I remember Mitchell. I turn in his direction to see a little man with a big head chanting non-stop. Suddenly, the Mitchell-tree morphed into one of the little men. Then, once the transformation was complete, they ran away, faster than any human.
I walk out of the forest and notice some thing's wrong. The sky was a nasty, bruised yellow. I wonder if I can still talk to trees. "How did the sky turn yellow?" I ask. "Most likely an intergalactic, malevolent, giant, psychic alien octopus. Why?" it replied. "A what?" I asked. "You mean you don't know?" The tree seemed to be laughing. "Well, an alien octopus, on a comet, came to earth and started wreaking havoc. However this was the Waikato, a place where man, mythology and magic lived together as one. The octopus was winning until a shaman, armed with a magic amulet, came and buried it, making both a basin and a mountain. He made a hole on the top. This is where Kakepuku stands..." It stopped, as if it had said too much. "How did you get here?" I asked. "Ah, all us trees were an army that were going to attack the octopus from behind. However, the octopus summoned up an ent who caught us and turned us into trees. I have said enough." I walked away and putting two and two together, (or three and one or 5 and 4 e.t.c) I figured that the octopus rotted away leaving a cavern and 8 tunnels. That made 6 I hadn't been through... I headed for the tunnel. Strangely, the stream had dried up. I walk inside the cave and see a lot of giant eels thrashing about on the ground and 3 floating bubbles of energy, in which I could see figures, 2 trying to gt out,1 mediating. Suddenly a torrent of water came crashing down. On reflex, using my staff, I make a raft and shield. The water came down with crushing force but I remained unharmed the water rushed away leaving me with a very angry taniwha...

Day 4

I woke up to find Caleb and a strange winged horse with white feathers on top of a layer of blue scales shaking me. The creature looks like Sam's cloak. We walked back to camp and found two other shelters. Then I got a huge shock. Walking out of a tent was Jimi. I groaned. “Not again”, I said to myself. Then another five people walked out of the bush: Connor, Geoff, Prim, Jessica and Niranjika.
Caleb explained that the strange creature that I met was Sam. Boy am I DUMB. He told me that Sam put on a magic cloak and he turned into a mythical creature. Caleb jumps on to him and rides away. “I’ll come back soon!” called Caleb.
Jimi went into the cave while my staff pulls me to the nikau grove. I try to resist but my legs don't obey. This, is scary. Suddenly my legs turn into wood and the "Woodification" spreads to my arms and I get taller. I cry out in fear but not in english, in tree. I am an ent. I call out to the others. Connor comes into the bush, spellbound. He comes within reach and I subconciously blow on him. “Tuna breath”, he gags. He tries to run away but his feet have turned into roots and he is stuck! He tries to scream but no sound comes out. It is probably the most horrible thing in my life but my ent body seems to be enjoying it. Within a minute he is just another nikau palm in the forest.
After waiting for hours, more people come into the forest: Mitchell, Kate, Step, Kinsasha and Grace. I try to stop, but I catch three of them and turn them into trees. Now only Grace and Kinsasha are still human...

Day 3

WOOOOOOOOOH! I woke up to the sound of an eerie, ghostly horn. I looked up at the sky. I had slept in. My group decided to go up the mountain to investigate. We walked up the mountain, through dense bush and Jimi lagging behind and complaining he was tired. “Could this get any worse?” I thought to myself. Then I had a stroke of luck; when I turned around, somehow, Jimi had disappeared.
We eventually came to a path. One way going left, one is going right. We took the left path. A few minutes later, we found a wall of rocks. We climbed over them and found a cave entrance. When we got inside it was pitch-black so I took out the torch. We walked further into the cave. We heard another group inside. We came to a fork in the road. Sam chose left because it was lucky for him. Caleb agreed. I also chose left so that was the way we went.
The path was getting damper and damper and the path was slowly going down, down, down. Suddenly we couldn’t hear the other group anymore. Finally we came to a stream. We found an old rickety raft tied to a pole. We got on and it went down into the water. We undid the mooring ropes and floated down the stream. We found a huge pillar in the middle of an under ground lake. Caleb holds on to it while me and Sam climb up. Fear grips me as I slip down into the murky depths.
The water's very dirty and feels disgusting. I swim back to the raft where Caleb and Sam are waiting with a strange cloak. We finally emerge from the cave. We come ashore dragging the raft with us. We put on some dry clothes and shelter under a tree. There’s something creepy about this place. Even though I'm very sleepy, I can't get to sleep. This place is stranger than it looks like.
In the middle of the night and see a strange flashing light. I follow it to a clearing in the nikau palms. I find a glowing staff. I pick it up and there’s a blinding flash of green light and then…darkness.

Day 2 Continued

Caleb and I thought we'd be safe but as soon as the cattle saw our spears, they charged at us too! My stomach dropped. We all ran as hard as we could but the bulls were gaining on us, while we were pulling away from the cows. Suddenly, I had an idea. I stuck my spear into the ground and pointed it at the oncoming bulls. One of the bulls charged on to the spear and crashed through it, it looked unharmed at first but then it stuttered, stopped, lay down and died. Triumph rushed through me but then I realized I was unarmed and there were still bulls charging at us. Suddenly, out of the bush, a spear came hurtling down and with a solid *THOCK* it landed in the ground in front of the leading bull. Startled it stopped and made a call. The other bulls, realizing the danger, stopped charging and started backing away. Another spear whistled out of the bushes and buried itself inside a bull's shoulder. The bulls charge charged away over the horizon. Shadows fall across the sky. I look up. With a yelp of terror, I jump back. A spear lands on the ground, barely missing me. With a look of triumph on his face, Jimi steps out of the bushes. Caleb, Sam and I look at him sternly. "You nearly killed us out there!" said Caleb, outraged. "Well I saved you!" replied Jimi, smirking. Caleb was so annoyed that he turned and walked away. I groaned and headed to the shelter. We collected wood again except this time it was strangely easier, as if we had been doing this for years. Perhaps there was more to this mountain than meets the eye... As I pondered on this, I lit the fire and roasted the lamb on the spit but we had no idea on how to cook the cow. We ate hungrily, as we hadn't eaten for the whole day and we had just been chased by an angry herd of rampaging bulls. We had a silent meal because Caleb was glowering coldly at Jimi. It was so unsettling that Sam went away early. An hour later, as I lay in the shelter, I had the strangest feeling that this was only the beginning...
